Viokase

Some people who have chronic pancreatitis or a surgically removed pancreas may develop a deficiency in pancreatic enzymes that requires treatment with Viokace® (pancrelipase). This prescription drug contains a mixture of different pancreatic enzymes taken from the pancreatic glands of pigs. Specifically, it contains lipases, proteases, and amylases.

Although this drug can be an effective treatment for many people, it's important to review Viokace's safety information before starting treatment to help minimize potentially dangerous complications. You may not be able to take this medicine if you are taking certain products, have certain bowel problems, or are pregnant or nursing.

Viokace comes as a tablet that is taken with each meal and snack. It is approved for use in adults only. Viokase is the correct spelling for the Canadian version of Viokace.
