Viokace Side Effects

It is possible for people who are taking Viokace to develop side effects like anal itching and bile tract stones. Although most reactions to this prescription medicine tend to be minor, there are also serious problems that can occur. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience difficulty breathing, trouble passing stool, or mouth irritation.

An Introduction to Viokace Side Effects

As with any medicine, Viokace® (pancrelipase) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Viokace. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects With Viokace

Viokace has been studied in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Viokace were carefully documented and compared to side effects that occurred in a group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredient). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In clinical studies, the most common Viokace side effects included:
  • Anal itching -- in up to 7 percent of people
  • Bile tract stones -- up to 7 percent.
Other side effects, each occurring in 3 percent of people, included:
  • Anemia
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Gas
  • Fluid buildup in the abdomen (acites)
  • Fluid retention in the extremities
  • Swelling of the gallbladder due to fluid buildup
  • Viral infection
  • Headache
  • Kidney cyst
  • Headache.
Keep in mind that this clinical study was quite small, with only 30 people taking Viokace. That translates to just one or two people developing each of the side effects listed.
