Before your colonoscopy, your bowels will need to be empty in order to get clearer, more accurate test results. To help cleanse the bowels the night before your procedure, you may be prescribed TriLyte® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution), an osmotic laxative. In addition to taking a medication such as TriLyte, your colonoscopy prep will probably involve fasting as well.
TriLyte comes as a powder that is mixed with water to form a solution. To prepare the solution for use, fill the container with lukewarm water to the indicated line (four-liter mark), and then shake the container well to completely dissolve the powder.
Drink one eight-ounce portion every 10 minutes until your bowel movements are watery and clear, or until you have consumed four liters. It normally takes about an hour after starting TriLyte to have your first bowel movement.
(To learn more about why it's important to be prepared for your colonoscopy, click TriLyte Uses. This article provides an in-depth description of the colonoscopy procedure and explains whether TriLyte can be used "off-label.")
