Telbivudine Side Effects

Research has shown that some of the most commonly reported side effects of telbivudine include diarrhea, coughing, and fatigue. Fortunately, most reactions to this drug tend to be minor and treated easily. However, it is important to be aware of potentially serious problems that require immediate medical treatment. Some of these serious reactions include unexplained muscle aches and blue hands or feet.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Telbivudine

Just like any medicine, telbivudine (Tyzeka®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Telbivudine Side Effects

Some side effects of telbivudine are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing and swallowing
  • Signs of lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood), such as:
    • Feeling tired or weak
    • Unusual muscle pain
    • Difficulty breathing
    • Abdominal (stomach) pain with nausea and vomiting
    • Feeling cold
    • Cold or blue hands and feet
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness
    • A fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in the arms or legs
  • Problems walking
  • Unexplained muscle aches, pains, tenderness, or weakness
  • Signs of liver problems, such as:
    • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
    • Dark urine
    • Tiredness or fatigue
    • Pain in the upper-right area of the abdomen (stomach)
    • Loss of appetite for several days.
