Tegaserod (Cont.)

When and How to Take Tegaserod?

Some general considerations for when and how to take tegaserod include:
 
  • Tegaserod comes in tablet form. Tegaserod is usually taken by mouth twice a day before meals (on an empty stomach).
     
  • For IBS, tegaserod is taken for four to six weeks. If tegaserod is working for you, your healthcare provider may keep you on tegaserod for an additional four to six weeks.
     
  • Tegaserod should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level of the drug in your blood.
     
  • For tegaserod to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Tegaserod will not work if you stop taking it.
     

Tegaserod Dosage

The dose of tegaserod that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
 
  • Your age
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
     
As with any medication, do not adjust your tegaserod dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Tegaserod Side Effects

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with tegaserod. However, not everyone who takes the medicine will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate tegaserod well. When side effects of tegaserod do occur, they are often minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
