To treat secondary biliary cirrhosis, the common bile duct obstruction must be unblocked. To do this, the healthcare provider may recommend surgery or a procedure known as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP for short).
Effective treatment of the obstruction results in a significant improvement in symptoms and survival, even in those with cirrhosis.
When the obstruction cannot be relieved, antibiotics may help in controlling symptoms; however, the disease will continue to progress.
