Rectiv and Breastfeeding

Because no research has been done to see if Rectiv (nitroglycerin anal ointment) passes through breast milk, it is unclear if this drug is completely safe for breastfeeding women or their nursing infants. The manufacturer recommends that the drug be used with caution in women who are nursing. Before starting treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about your particular situation.

Can Women Use Rectiv When Breastfeeding?

Rectiv™ (nitroglycerin anal ointment) is an ointment that is used to treat anal fissures. At this time, it is unknown if Rectiv passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider before using this medication. The manufacturer does not forbid breastfeeding women from using it, although it does state that the drug should be used with caution in such circumstances.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Rectiv

No research has been done to see if Rectiv passes through breast milk. Based on the known actions and side effects, if the drug does pass through breast milk, it is reasonable to expect that it could cause low blood pressure (hypotension) and headaches in the infant.
In a study of 40 women who used a nitroglycerin ointment of unknown strength to treat postpartum anal fissures, no problems were seen in the babies. This suggests that Rectiv is possibly safe for use in breastfeeding, although certain conclusions cannot be drawn from the relatively small study, particularly because it is unclear what strength of ointment was used.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Rectiv use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
