Ranitidine, which is available over the counter or by prescription, is a medicine that is licensed to treat certain problems with the esophagus, stomach, and intestines. It belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 blockers and is sometimes referred to as an "acid reducer." Sold under the brand name Zantac® and available as a generic, ranitidine can be used for the treatment of conditions such as heartburn, acid indigestion, ulcers, GERD, and erosive esophagitis.
