Prepopik Uses

How Does It Work?

The sodium picosulfate in this medication is a stimulant laxative. It stimulates the muscular movements of the colon to help clear out the contents of the colon. The other active ingredients (magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid) combine to form magnesium citrate, an osmotic laxative. Magnesium citrate works by drawing water into the colon, which softens the stool and causes watery bowel movements. The watery bowel movements flush waste from the intestines, cleaning them out.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Prepopik?

This product is only approved for use in people 18 years of age and older. It has not been adequately studied in children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use Prepopik. In clinical trials, no differences in safety or effectiveness were seen between older adults and younger age groups. However, some older adults may have an increased risk for certain serious Prepopik side effects, such as:
  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Perforation (tear) of the esophagus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Buildup of fluid in the lungs.

Off-Label Prepopik Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than bowel preparation before a colonoscopy. This is known as an "off-label" use. Prepopik may be used off-label to cleanse the bowel before other gastrointestinal procedures.
