Prepopik Side Effects

If you are taking Prepopik and develop lightheadedness, unexplained fever, or seizures, let your healthcare provider know right away. Although not everyone who takes this colon-cleansing medication will experience problems, some of the most commonly reported Prepopik side effects include nausea, headaches, and vomiting. Other common problems include bloating, cramping, and watery diarrhea, which are expected with bowel-prep products.

An Introduction to Prepopik Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Prepopik® (sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the drug will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Prepopik. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Prepopik

Prepopik has been studied in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Prepopik, while another group was given a different colon-cleansing regimen. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the other medication.

In these studies, the most common Prepopik side effects included:

  • Nausea -- in up to 3 percent of people
  • Headache -- up to 2.7 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 1.4 percent.

Abdominal (stomach) bloating, distension, pain/cramping, and watery diarrhea were not recorded as side effects, as these are expected with bowel-prep medications. It can be assumed that reactions such as these are quite common.
