Prepopik

When and How to Take It

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Prepopik include the following:

  • This medication comes in powder form. The powder is dissolved in water just before use. Two doses are taken, either a "split-dose" regimen (one dose the evening before and one in the morning) or a "day-before" regimen (one dose in the late afternoon/early evening and one dose six hours later in the late evening). The "split-dose" regimen is preferred, as it seems to be more effective.

  • Each packet is mixed in five ounces of water. Stir for two to three minutes. It is normal for the liquid to feel warm during stirring due to the chemical reaction between the components.

  • Do not add any ingredients, including flavorings or other liquids, to the Prepopik solution.

  • You must consume at least five 8-ounce glasses of clear liquids after the first dose, and at least three 8-ounce glasses of clear liquids after the second dose. This extra liquid should be consumed within five hours of each dose. Make sure to finish your liquids two hours or more before your colonoscopy, as you should stop drinking by then.

  • Examples of clear liquids include water, clear broth, apple juice, white cranberry juice, white grape juice, ginger ale, plain JELL-O (not red or purple), and frozen juice bars (not purple or red).

  • If you experience abdominal (stomach) pain or bloating after the first dose, wait until these side effects have gone away before taking the second dose.

  • For Prepopik to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

Dosing Information

There is only one standard dose of Prepopik; however, the dosing instructions your healthcare provider recommends may vary, depending on whether you use the "split-dose" or "day-before" regimen.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
