Prepopik and Breastfeeding

Because of the unknown risks of breastfeeding while using Prepopik (sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid), this drug may not be appropriate for women who want to nurse their child. No research has been done on whether the drug passes through breast milk, so women should talk to their healthcare provider about the potential risks before using this bowel-prep product.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Prepopik?

Prepopik® (sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/anhydrous citric acid) is a prescription medication licensed to empty the bowel before a colonoscopy. This is known as colonoscopy preparation, or bowel prep. It is not known whether Prepopik passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, talk with your healthcare provider before taking this medication.

More Information About Prepopik and Breastfeeding

No research has been done to see if Prepopik passes through breast milk. If you require bowel cleansing prior to an intestinal procedure, your healthcare provider may recommend Prepopik in the absence of safer options.

If you are comfortable giving your child formula, or if you have a good supply of pumped breast milk in your freezer, you might consider "pumping and dumping" your milk and bottle-feeding your baby during your bowel prep, just to be safe. However, this is not always possible or advisable.

Keep in mind that the sedatives or other medications you may be given during the colonoscopy might not be safe while breastfeeding, depending on the particular medications chosen. Make sure to discuss this with your healthcare provider ahead of time.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Prepopik use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
