What Is Ondansetron Oral Soluble Film Used For?

A healthcare provider may prescribe ondansetron oral soluble film before surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation to help prevent nausea and vomiting. This medication works in the small intestine and also by blocking a specific chemical in the brain. Some off-label uses of ondansetron oral soluble film include treating alcoholism, morning sickness, and chronic nausea or vomiting.

An Introduction to Ondansetron Oral Soluble Film Uses

Ondansetron oral soluble film (Zuplenz™) is a prescription medicine licensed for preventing nausea and vomiting due to several causes. Specific uses for this medication include preventing nausea and vomiting caused by:

  • Surgery (postoperative nausea and vomiting)
  • Chemotherapy (chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting)
  • Radiation therapy (radiation-induced nausea and vomiting).

Nausea and Vomiting After Surgery

Surgery can sometimes cause nausea and vomiting. However, not all types of surgery are likely to cause these symptoms. Surgeries involving the abdomen (stomach area), eyes, ears, nose, and throat are most likely to cause nausea or vomiting.

People who have a higher risk for postoperative nausea and vomiting include:

  • Women
  • People who get motion sickness
  • People who have had nausea or vomiting after surgery in the past
  • People who do not smoke
  • People who will use certain morphine-like medications ("opioids") after surgery.

Your healthcare provider will take all of these factors into consideration when deciding if you will need medication to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Ondansetron oral soluble film is given before surgery to help prevent nausea and vomiting from starting. It is not approved to treat nausea or vomiting after it starts, and it is much harder to treat nausea or vomiting than to prevent it from happening in the first place.
