Taking NuLYTELY

If you are going to have a colonoscopy, a healthcare provider may prescribe NuLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution). This medication is a type of laxative that is typically started the afternoon or evening before the scheduled procedure. It usually takes about four hours for NuLYTELY to completely empty the bowels.

The recommended NuLYTELY dosage in adults is eight ounces (240 mL) every 10 minutes until watery bowel movements are clear and free from solid matter, or four liters are consumed. Usually, at least three liters are needed for watery and clear stool. When using NuLYTELY, it is important to consume each eight-ounce portion as quickly as possible over the 10-minute period.

You should not eat solid food within two hours of starting NuLYTELY. For best results, avoid eating solid foods for three to four hours before starting NuLYTELY. Ask your healthcare provider how long to fast before and after using this medication, and what types of food or liquids you can consume.
