NuLYTELY Uses

How Does It Work?

NuLYTELY is an osmotic laxative. It works by drawing large amounts of water into the colon, which softens the stool and causes watery bowel movements. These bowel movements usually cleanse the bowel within four hours.

In addition to polyethylene glycol (the laxative component), NuLYTELY contains electrolytes (potassium and sodium) to replace any electrolytes lost from the body during treatment.

Can Children Use NuLYTELY?

This product is approved for use in children as young as six months of age.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use NuLYTELY. However, they may have an increased risk for certain serious NuLYTELY side effects, including:

  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Perforation of the esophagus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Off-Label Uses of NuLYTELY

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend NuLYTELY for something other than cleansing the bowel before a colonoscopy. This would be known as an "off-label" use. NuLYTELY may be used off-label to cleanse the bowel before other gastrointestinal procedures.
