NuLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is a prescription laxative given to people before they have a colonoscopy procedure. It is used to help prep the bowel. NuLYTELY works by drawing large amounts of water into the colon, which softens the stool and causes watery bowel movements. Using this laxative typically cleanses the bowels within about four hours.
It is necessary for the bowels to be completely empty before the colonoscopy so that your healthcare provider can look for causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits. Any stool inside the colon may hide important findings.
(Click NuLYTELY Uses for more details on how to prep for a colonoscopy procedure. This article also explains how this laxative works and whether children can use it.)
