Is NuLYTELY a Generic?

NuLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is a prescription laxative used to empty the bowel before a colonoscopy procedure. If you are prescribed this medicine, you may wonder if there is a generic NuLYTELY available.

The patents for NuLYTELY have expired, and it is available as a generic. The generic version is available in only one strength and form -- Polyethylene Glycol 3350 and Electrolytes for Oral Solution. The product is available in disposable jugs that contain 420 grams of polyethylene glycol 3350 and electrolytes in powder form for reconstitution.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that generic NuLYTELY is equivalent to the brand-name drug. However, the generic version may have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
