MoviPrep Uses

How Does It Work?

MoviPrep is an osmotic laxative. It works by drawing water into the colon, which softens the stool and causes watery bowel movements. The watery bowel movements flush waste from the intestines, cleaning them out.

In addition to polyethylene glycol 3350 (the laxative component), MoviPrep contains electrolytes (potassium and sodium) to replace any electrolytes lost from the body during treatment.

Can Children Use MoviPrep?

MoviPrep is only approved for use in people 18 years of age and older. It has not been adequately studied in children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use MoviPrep. In clinical trials, no differences in safety or effectiveness were seen between older adults and younger age groups. However, some older adults may have an increased risk for certain serious MoviPrep side effects, including:

  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Perforation (tear) of the esophagus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Accumulation of fluid in the lungs.

Off-Label Uses of MoviPrep

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend MoviPrep for something other than cleansing the bowel before a colonoscopy. This would be known as an "off-label" use. For example, MoviPrep may be used off-label to cleanse the bowel before other gastrointestinal procedures.
