MoviPrep and Breastfeeding
Although no research has been done to determine if MoviPrep would pass through human breast milk, this laxative is not expected to significantly be absorbed into the bloodstream. Therefore, it is probably unlikely that this medication would be passed through breast milk to a breastfed infant. However, due to the unknown risks, make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about breastfeeding before taking MoviPrep.
MoviPrep® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is a prescription medication licensed to empty the bowel before a colonoscopy. This is known as colonoscopy preparation, or bowel prep. It is not known whether MoviPrep passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are nursing a child, talk with your healthcare provider before taking this medication.
No research has been done to see if MoviPrep passes through breast milk. MoviPrep is not expected to be significantly absorbed into the bloodstream after normal use. Therefore, it would be unlikely to reach the breast milk. However, because MoviPrep has not been studied in women who are nursing or in breastfed infants, all potential problems cannot yet be ruled out.
If you require bowel cleansing prior to an intestinal procedure, your healthcare provider may recommend MoviPrep in the absence of safer options.
You should discuss breastfeeding and MoviPrep with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
