Uses of Misoprostol

Misoprostol (Cytotec®) is approved for use in adults who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and who are at risk for gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers) or ulcer-related complications.

Misoprostol is a type of prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance found naturally in the body. It works by protecting the lining of the stomach and decreasing stomach acid secretion.

There are also several unapproved ("off-label") uses for misoprostol. Some of these unapproved uses include:

  • Inducing labor
  • Terminating a pregnancy
  • Treating chronic constipation.
