Misoprostol Side Effects

Common Side Effects

Misoprostol has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and compared to those that occurred in a group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they occurred, and how they compared to the placebo.
In these studies, the most common bothersome, but usually not dangerous, misoprostol side effects included:
  • Diarrhea -- in up to 40 percent of people
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain -- up to 20 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 3.2 percent
  • Gas -- up to 2.9 percent
  • Headache -- up to 2.4 percent
  • Heartburn or indigestion -- up to 2 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 1.3 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 1.1 percent.

Some of these rare but possible misoprostol side effects include but are not limited to:
