How to Use Misoprostol

Misoprostol (Cytotec®) is given to adults who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and are at risk for developing stomach ulcers or other ulcer-related problems. People who receive this prescription drug may wonder when and how to most effectively use misoprostol.

This medication comes in the form of a tablet that is taken by mouth four times daily. It is usually advised to take misoprostol after a meal, and your last dose of the day at bedtime. This may help prevent diarrhea, which is a common side effect of the drug.

The recommended dosage of misoprostol is 200 mcg four times daily. However, if you develop intolerable side effects, your healthcare provider may lower this amount to 100 mcg four times daily. The medicine is typically used until you stop taking NSAIDs.
