MiraLAX for Children

Available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication, MiraLAX® (polyethylene glycol 3350) is a laxative used to treat occasional constipation. Like all OTC medications, it is available without a prescription.

Although this laxative is not officially approved to treat constipation in children, MiraLAX is sometimes used off-label for this purpose. Ask a healthcare provider before giving your child MiraLAX. If your child's healthcare provider recommends this laxative for your child's constipation, follow his or her dosing instructions.

MiraLAX is known as an osmotic laxative. It works by drawing water into the colon, making the stool soft, and increasing the number of bowel movements. This product will usually cause a bowel movement in one to three days.
