Can You Take MiraLAX While Nursing?

If you are nursing a child, you may wonder if you can take MiraLAX® (polyethylene glycol 3350) safely to help relieve constipation. No research has been done to see if this medication passes through breast milk.

It is unlikely that MiraLAX would reach the breast milk, as this laxative is not absorbed into the bloodstream after use. However, because this product has not been studied in women who are nursing, every potential problem cannot yet be ruled out.

If you require treatment for constipation while breastfeeding, your healthcare provider may recommend other options, such dietary changes, adequate fluid intake, or exercising within your ability. If medication is needed, your healthcare provider may recommend MiraLAX if safer alternatives are not an option.
