After any major stress event, such as undergoing a big surgery like liver donation, depression is common. Although the frequency of depression is not known for liver donation, it can occur in up to 15 of every 100 people who donate one of their kidneys.
The decision to undergo a big operation will also have a significant effect upon your loved ones, such as a spouse, children, other family members, and friends. It's important that their concerns and fears are addressed as well. Your donor advocate and the transplant staff can help you with these issues.
Liver donation surgery may lead to changes in your job or your ability to get or keep health insurability. These changes can cause stress and contribute to depression as well.
If you feel depressed after your surgery, or have other family conflicts, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she may prescribe antidepressants for a time or may also want to refer you to a counselor.
