The goal of liver donation surgery is to replace a person's diseased liver with part of your healthy liver. For many people with diseased livers, a liver transplant is their last hope for survival.
It's important to remember that this is a major surgery, both for you and your loved one. While many liver recipients go on to have active lives after a transplant, there are no guarantees that the surgery will be successful.
You have been given a lot of information to think about and discuss with your healthcare team. Before you decide whether or not to donate part of your liver, be sure to talk to your advocate doctor and take advantage of resources such as the United Network for Organ Sharing website.
By using these resources and this presentation to learn more about liver donation surgery -- including its risks, possible benefits, and the other treatment choices the recipient may have -- you can make the decision that's best for you.
