Liver donation surgery is performed in the hospital. After the surgery, you will stay in the hospital until you are ready to leave. Some people also need to stay overnight before the procedure.

Your healthcare provider should give you specific instructions, telling you where and when to arrive at the medical facility, and what to expect the day of and the days following your surgery. You should also receive instructions on how to prepare for your surgery. For example, you should not smoke or use other tobacco products for at least 24 hours before the operation, but longer is even better.

When the time comes, you may want to have someone drive you to the hospital and help you get settled in. Make sure you have a list of your current medications, including prescriptions and any over-the-counter medication, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking. Also, tell your healthcare provider about any allergies you may have.

You will be asked to not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before your surgery. After the surgery, most liver donors stay in the hospital for about 4 to 8 days after the operation, but some people need to stay longer.

Since you won't be able to drive for some time after your procedure, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home when you leave the hospital.
