An ultrasound is a painless test that uses sound waves to produce images of the structures inside your body, such as your organs and other tissues. The entire process usually takes less than half an hour.
You will be asked to lie on your back for this test. Gel will be put on your abdomen to help transmit the sound waves better. Your healthcare provider will then move the ultrasound sensor around the area of your liver. Your provider may ask you to hold your breath at times, or change positions.
The ultrasound images can help your doctor know more about how your liver is working, its size, and whether or not it looks normal.
