Immunosuppressants
Almost any time a person receives an organ transplant, he or she will need to be on special medications from then on. So, the recipient will probably start taking these medications after the transplant surgery and continue taking them for the rest of his or her life.
These medications are called "immunosuppressants." They work by reducing the strength of the recipient's immune system. This helps stop the immune system from attacking the new liver. However, it's important to know that even with these medications, some liver recipients will still have problems with their new liver.
Also, since the recipient's immune system won't be as strong as usual, it will be easier to develop infections. So to stay healthy, the recipient needs to stay in close communication with his or her healthcare provider. If an infection develops, the healthcare provider will probably need to prescribe antibiotics.
