Heartburn appears to happen more often in people with certain medical conditions, including:

Diabetes
Scleroderma
Raynaud's phenomenon
Peptic ulcer
Hypersecretory conditions, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Infections of the esophagus
Esophageal cancer.

A Summary of the Causes of Heartburn

Doctors and heartburn research scientists do not know the specific cause or causes of heartburn. They do, however, know a number of factors that increase a person's chances for developing heartburn. These risk factors do not guarantee that a person will have heartburn; they simply increase the odds. Your doctor can help you identify the factors that may be contributing to your heartburn.
