HalfLytely® and Bisacodyl (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl) is a laxative used to empty the bowels before a colonoscopy. It is necessary for the bowels to be completely empty before the colonoscopy so that your healthcare provider can look for causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits. Any stool inside the colon may hide important findings.
The dosing instructions for HalfLytely and Bisacodyl are the same for everyone, regardless of age or weight. The kit comes with one bisacodyl tablet and a jug of HalfLytely powder (to be dissolved in water before use). Normally, the bisacodyl tablet is taken first, and the HalfLytely solution is started after the first bowel movement, or six hours later (whichever comes first).
(For a more in-depth look at the instructions for this prescription laxative, click HalfLytely and Bisacodyl Uses. This article also discusses how the product works and lists possible off-label uses.)
