A healthcare provider may prescribe HalfLytely® and Bisacodyl (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl) prior to a colonoscopy. This laxative is used before this procedure to help empty the bowels. Although most people do not have problems with this product, it is not suitable for everyone.
For example, when people with kidney problems use HalfLytely and Bisacodyl, they may have an increased risk for electrolyte problems. If this laxative causes an electrolyte imbalance, it could increase the risk for certain rare but serious side effects, such as seizures or heart rhythm problems.
If you have kidney disease, it is important to stay hydrated while using HalfLytely and Bisacodyl. You may also need certain blood tests before and after your colonoscopy.
