HalfLytely and Bisacodyl Warnings and Precautions

Before taking HalfLytely and Bisacodyl, let your healthcare provider know if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, or have any allergies. Other safety precautions with HalfLytely and Bisacodyl include warnings against using this medication if you have certain medical issues, such as an electrolyte problem, kidney disease, or difficulty swallowing. This medicine may also cause seizures or heart rhythm problems in rare cases.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking HalfLytely® and Bisacodyl (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl) if you have:
 
  • Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Ever had a seizure
  • Difficulty swallowing or problems with vomiting
  • A hole in the bowel (bowel perforation)
  • Intestinal blockage (obstruction)
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain, abdominal distention (swelling), or nausea and vomiting, which could be signs of bowel obstruction
  • An electrolyte problem, such as low blood sodium (hyponatremia) or potassium (hypokalemia)
  • Dietary restrictions that require a low-salt diet
  • Stomach or bowel problems, including gastric retention, ulcerative colitis, toxic colitis, toxic megacolon, or ileus
  • A heart rhythm problem (arrhythmia) or condition called QT prolongation
  • Heart problems, such as heart failure or a recent heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Recently been withdrawing from alcohol
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
 
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
 
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
