HalfLytely and Bisacodyl and Breastfeeding
No research has been done to determine if HalfLytely and Bisacodyl passes through breast milk. Because this laxative is not thought to be absorbed into the bloodstream, it is unlikely that it would be passed through breast milk. However, because all of the potential risks are unknown, consult your healthcare provider if you are thinking of breastfeeding while using HalfLytely and Bisacodyl.
HalfLytely® and Bisacodyl (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and bisacodyl) is a prescription medication licensed to empty the bowels before a colonoscopy. This is known as colonoscopy preparation, or bowel prep. It is not known if HalfLytely and Bisacodyl passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding a child, talk with your healthcare provider before using this laxative.
No research has been done to see if HalfLytely and Bisacodyl passes through breast milk. Polyethylene glycol 3350, the active ingredient in HalfLytely, is not expected to be absorbed into the bloodstream after normal use. Similarly, bisacodyl tablets are only minimally absorbed. Therefore, it would be unlikely that this medication would reach the breast milk. However, because HalfLytely and Bisacodyl has not been studied in women who are breastfeeding, every potential problem cannot yet be ruled out.
It is very important for your healthcare provider to have a clear view of the inside of your large intestine or colon during a colonoscopy. For this reason, the bowels are completely emptied prior to the procedure. If you require a colonoscopy while breastfeeding, your healthcare provider will likely recommend a medication like HalfLytely and Bisacodyl before the procedure.
