When to Start Bowel Prep With GoLYTELY

GoLYTELY^® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is usually started the afternoon or evening before a colonoscopy or barium enema x-ray exam. The laxative is used in order to empty the bowels, making the colon easier for your healthcare provider to see and improving the accuracy of the test.

Taking a laxative in addition to fasting before your test is known as "bowel prep." Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions on when to start your bowel prep and how long it should last.

GoLYTELY solution is prepared by filling the container it came in to the indicated line (four-liter mark) with lukewarm water. Shake the container well to dissolve the powder. Normally, eight ounces of the mixed solution are taken every 10 minutes until bowel movements are watery and clear, or until four liters are consumed.
