What Is GoLYTELY Bowel Prep?

The laxative GoLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is commonly used as part of a person's "bowel prep" before a colonoscopy or other gastrointestinal exam.

This medication comes in the form of a powder, which should be dissolved in lukewarm water before use. Normally, eight ounces of the mixed solution are taken every 10 minutes until bowel movements are watery and clear, or until four liters are consumed.

As another part of your bowel prep, you should not eat solid food for at least two hours before taking GoLYTELY. Ideally, you should fast for three to four hours before using this laxative.

(Click GoLYTELY for more details on preparing your bowels with this product, including what to discuss with your healthcare provider and why it is important to cleanse the bowels before certain gastrointestinal procedures.)
