What Are the Ingredients in GoLYTELY Solution?

GoLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is a prescription drug that works to empty the bowels completely before certain gastrointestinal exams, such as a colonoscopy. It comes as a powder that is dissolved in water. Typically the afternoon or evening before the procedure, large quantities of the solution are drunk until bowel movements are watery and clear.

Before drinking the solution, you may wonder about the ingredients in GoLYTELY. In addition to polyethylene glycol, all GoLYTELY products contain sodium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and potassium chloride, which are included for electrolyte replacement.

Although you may be tempted to add your own ingredients to GoLYTELY, such as flavorings or other liquids, you should not do this. However, you may use the pineapple flavor packet that comes with the product.
