The laxative GoLYTELY® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) comes in the form of a powder that is mixed with lukewarm water to make a solution. This solution is drunk before a colonoscopy or certain other gastrointestinal procedures in order to empty out the bowels. The standard dosage calls for eight ounces of the mixed solution to be taken every 10 minutes until bowel movements are watery and clear (which usually requires at least three liters), or until four liters are consumed.
The main ingredient in GoLYTELY solution is polyethylene glycol, which works by drawing large amounts of water into the colon. However, it also contains electrolytes, such as potassium and sodium, to replace the electrolytes lost from the body in the watery stool.
