Now, let's discuss what will happen on the day of your procedure.

At your scheduled time healthcare professionals will greet and assist you if needed, as you change into a gown and lie on a bed or table. If you wear eyeglasses, contacts or dentures, you will also need to remove these. Your privacy will be maintained at all times and the staff will make every effort to keep you warm and comfortable.

To prepare you, your healthcare professional will first make sure that you have an IV. You will be given medications and fluids through your IV during the procedure, to relax and comfort you. You may also receive antibiotics if a blocked duct is suspected.

Patches will be applied to the skin of your chest, arms or legs for an electrocardiogram, or EKG. An EKG records the electrical activity of your heart.

An automatic blood pressure cuff will be placed on your arm and a pulse oximeter, which checks oxygen levels in your blood will be taped to your finger.

From the table in the procedure room, you will see several pieces of equipment, a television screen and tables of sterile instruments.

During this time, you may also hear many strange noises, such as loud, high and low pitched beeps. These are all normal and are no cause for concern.
