Closed Caption - Upper Endoscopy Complications -- Major

Many types of problems can happen, and we cannot list all of them here. Some of the more common major problems that can happen are:

· Perforation or a tear in the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine

· Reaction to medication

· Bleeding

· Heart or lung problems possibly including:

o Pneumonia

o Irregular heart rhythms

o Lung or heart failure

· Other rare or unlikely events

Depending on the individual situation, a major complication may lead to a hospital stay, blood transfusion or another endoscopic procedure. In rare cases, a major problem may also lead to surgery, permanent disability or even loss of life.
