Viokace Medication Information
Available by prescription only, Viokace® (pancrelipase) is a medicine used to treat pancreatic enzyme deficiencies. It is approved for use in people who have chronic pancreatitis or a surgically removed pancreas.
This drug comes as a tablet that is taken with every snack and meal. Unlike other pancrelipase products, Viokace does not have a special coating to protect it from stomach acid. Instead, it must be taken with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) type of acid-reducing medicine. It is approved for use in adults only. Side effects are possible and may include anal itching and bile tract stones.
Before starting treatment with Viokace, your healthcare provider will need information on your medical history and any other medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking. He or she will also need to know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and whether you have any problems with your bowels or kidneys.
