Linaclotide Drug Information

Available by prescription only, linaclotide (LinzessTM) is a medicine used to treat certain types of bowel problems, including irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (long-term constipation with no known cause). It is only approved for use in people who are at least 18 years old.

Linaclotide comes as a capsule that is taken once a day. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, preferably 30 minutes before your first meal of the day. While most people tolerate this medicine well, side effects can occur and include gas, diarrhea, and abdominal (stomach) pain.

Because not everyone can safely use this drug, it's important to review the safety information on this product before starting treatment with linaclotide; this includes things like possible allergic reactions and side effects. Also, let your healthcare provider know if you have any other medical conditions, such as a bowel obstruction, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

(Click Linaclotide for more information on this drug, including how it works, how your dosage is calculated, and why it is not appropriate for some people.)
