Information on Food Intolerance
Sometimes people suspect they have a food allergy when they are really experiencing another type of reaction called "food intolerance." This reaction is far more common than a true food allergy. With food intolerance, the immune system does not cause the unpleasant symptoms, though these symptoms can look and feel like those of an allergy. For example, depending on the type of food intolerance a person has, symptoms can include things like:
- Gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort
- Lung irritation.
Many types of food intolerances exist. The most common ones include:
- Food poisoning
- Histamine toxicity
- Lactose intolerance
- Food additives.
