About Colonoscopy

If a person has a sudden, unexplained change in bowel habits or possible signs of colon or rectal cancer, a colonoscopy may be recommended. During this procedure, a healthcare provider inserts a small, flexible tube with a camera on it into the rectum. If anything abnormal is detected -- for example, a polyp -- it can be removed with tiny instruments and sent to a laboratory for further examination.
