About Chronic Pancreatitis

When the pancreas becomes inflamed, it is known as pancreatitis. When the condition has been present for a long time, it's called chronic pancreatitis. Common causes include alcoholism or a blocked duct, but genetics can play a role as well. In order to make a diagnosis, healthcare providers typically ask questions about a person's medical and family history, and will also perform certain tests.

Once chronic pancreatitis has been diagnosed, treatment can begin. This is often a two-step process, with the first step aimed at relieving the pain associated with this condition -- typically through medications -- and the second step aimed at preventing symptoms from returning -- typically by making certain dietary changes.
