What Is Dicyclomine Used For?

Dicyclomine is used for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Specifically, it is used to help relieve the painful spasms of the digestive tract associated with the condition. Healthcare providers may also occasionally recommend off-label dicyclomine uses, such as for the treatment of bladder problems caused by bladder muscle spasms, bedwetting, and spasms of the digestive tract unrelated to IBS.

An Overview of Dicyclomine Uses

Dicyclomine hydrochloride (Bentyl®) is a prescription medication that has been approved to treat irritable bowel syndrome (also known as IBS).

IBS is a disorder that interferes with the normal functions of the colon (large intestine). Irritable bowel symptoms include:

This condition can be affected by many things, including your diet and stress (see Stress and Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or other emotions. In addition to medication, avoiding certain foods (see IBS Diet) or stressful situations may help relieve symptoms of IBS.

How Does Dicyclomine Work?

Dicyclomine is part of a group of medications known as antimuscarinics or anticholinergics. It works by blocking specific receptors (called muscarinic receptors) in the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, helping to relieve the painful spasms associated with IBS. For this reason, dicyclomine is also known as an antispasmodic medication.

Dicyclomine Use in Children or Teens

Dicyclomine is not approved for use in children or teens. Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this drug in these age groups. In any case, dicyclomine should never be used in infants younger than six months old.
