What Is Colyte?

Before your colonoscopy, your healthcare provider may recommend taking a product called colyte® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution). You may wonder what this medication is used for. As a laxative, colyte is used to empty out the bowels completely. In most cases, it is used the night before your procedure.

It comes in the form of a powder, which is mixed with water to form a solution (flavor packets are also provided to improve the taste, if desired). Large quantities of the solution are drunk until bowel movements are watery and clear. Emptying the bowels with a product like colyte will help ensure the accuracy of your gastrointestinal exam.
