As a laxative, colyte® (polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is used to empty the bowels the night before a colonoscopy or a barium enema x-ray exam. It is approved for adults only and is available in both brand-name and generic form.

How does it work? As an osmotic laxative, colyte draws large amounts of water into the colon. It is this action that softens the stool and stimulates bowel movements. The resulting watery bowel movements flush out the intestines.
