Why Doctors Recommend a Colonoscopy?
Based on your past medical history, physical exam and current symptoms, your doctor is recommending that you have a procedure called a colonoscopy.
Problems in the rectum and colon can be caused by conditions you were born with, or diseases. Often, patients will have symptoms such as blood in the stool, cramping, diarrhea or changes in bowel habits.
This procedure allows your doctor to look and study the lining of your rectum and your entire colon by placing a soft, flexible tube that acts like a video camera into the rectum.
Through this procedure, your doctor can check for abnormal growths, inflammation, and areas of bleeding among other things that may be causing your symptoms. Some treatment methods can even be done during the colonoscopy. We will talk more about these later in the presentation.
At this time, your doctor feels that a colonoscopy is appropriate for your particular situation.
