On the day before your colonoscopy, you should eat a light breakfast. After 12 noon, you are only allowed to drink clear liquids. This includes: black coffee or tea; bouillon; water; apple, grape, or cranberry juice; soda pop; Gatorade®; hard candy such as Life Savers or lemon drops; and Jell-O. Make sure not to eat or drink anything with blue or red dye. The dye makes it more difficult to see the inside lining of your colon. You should also avoid any dairy products like milk, ice cream, or cream soup.
To begin the prep, take your first Reglan pill at 4:00 pm. You should begin drinking the liquid medication at 4:30 pm. At 5:00 pm, take your second Reglan pill.
Because these medicines clean out your bowels, you will begin having diarrhea after you take them. The diarrhea will start about 1-2 hours after you drink the solution and last 1-2 hours after the solution is finished.
You must drink the whole gallon of solution. For many people, it takes about 4 hours to drink all the solution. So, by 8:30 pm, you should be finished drinking the solution, and by 10:30 pm, you should be done having diarrhea. If it takes longer to drink the solution, you will probably be up longer with the cleaning-out process.
If you feel like you are going to vomit during this time, stop drinking the solution for 30 minutes, do something else, and allow your stomach to empty. Try to drink more solution after the 30 minutes are up. If you continue feeling sick, call your doctor.
Although you may feel nauseated while you are taking the Reglan and drinking the solution, you should have no other side effects with this medicine. For most people, the worst part of the procedure is now over.
You can continue having clear liquids after you have completed the bowel-cleansing process. However, you should not have anything to eat or drink for at least 4 hours before your procedure.
